AKSONA MEHMET
Experience of 45 years on the sea and under the water
The owner and the captain of the boat is Captain Mehmet, called as “Aksona Mehmet” by his friends.
Name of the boat is composed of two popular diving expressions;
“Aksona” means decompression and “Mancorna” is the idiom used for the diving style of ancient sponge divers.
Aksona Mehmet is born in Bodrum – Çiftlik village in 1950. His family was settled in Çiftlik five generations ago and worked as farmers. He is the only seaman in his family. After he graduated the primary school, he went to the junior high school in Milas, but after two years he had to leave due to the impossibilities.

He was thirteen years old, as he was interested in the underwater. He began to dive around Bodrum. He started diving professionally in Mai 1965 on the sponge diver boat “Engin Kardeşler”, owned by Muzaffer Cengiz. His first diving point was Deli İbrahim Bay in the near of Bodrum. After that he couldn’t resist the underwater world. His passion for the sea turned into an irresistable love.
After he completed his military service on a mariner ship in 1970-71, he worked in the Greek Islands as sponge diver in 1974.
He buyed his first boat for sponge diving “Şafak” in 1981 and changed her name as “Aksona”.
In the same year, in Mai, he made his first experience for sponge diving on his own boat with a crew of six sponge divers.
He has got married in 1983. His son Fatih was born in 1986 and his daughter Deniz, in 1988.
In 1985 and 1986 he took part in many international diving championships and won rewards of several grades. He won the first prize in national championships, for six years.
In our country, he dived at many points from Bandırma to Kızkalesi-Mersin, during his sealife.
In 1987 he decided to serve as a blue cruise yacht at summer times on his new built tirhandila of 12 meters.
In 1998 his second and current boat he was dreaming of, “Aksona Mancorna” of 18 meters, was built.
On this boat, diving is optional; you can just enjoy the blue cruise; since Aksona only prefers to dive with experienced divers.He doesn’t prefer to teach beginners.
He mentions that the sea has a character for teaching everybody about love, the beauty, living at peace and most of all, about the art of taking the endless energy of the nature to advantage for the human beings.
That’s why he believes in the sea, as a shortcut reaching out to the civilization, set as a target by Atatürk once.
But in this shortcut might be just one thing missing, as to Aksona:
He wishes as “Oh, if the mermaids of the myths were just alive, maybe I wouldn’t step ever on land.”
Aksona Mancorna offers a blue cruise that is preferable for the sea lovers who get their strength from the deep waters.
On his 40. anniversary of his healthy sealife, he sends his greetings from the blue deep waters of The Aegean Sea to all the seamen of the world.
